Peppered Bunny Crochet Hot Pad
FINISHED SIZE: approximately 11“x 8”
MATERIALS:
#4 Cotton Yarn
For the body (MC), I used white with gray speckles, but plain white for the arms and legs (C2). Whatever color you choose for your body, I recommend using a shade lighter for the arms and legs so that they will stand out a little better.
I recommend using the same brand of yarn for the arms, legs, carrot and body. Different brands of #4 yarn are different sizes. Big Twist cotton #4 is slightly smaller than Peaches and Creme and Sugar ‘n Cream.
For the Gray Bunny, I used
Gray (MC) for both the body and legs. You will need one 4 oz ball for the MC and
just a little bit of scrap yarn: Pink, Orange, Green, Black and White.
Arms & Legs - C2 (whatever color you choose. I used white for the speckled bunny)
3.25 mm, 3.75 mm, and 5.0 mm hooks
Tapestry needle

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in st, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st, turn. (4 sc)

ATTACH ARMS & FEET: Using picture as a reference and being careful to leave the stitches on the outside border of the body free, lay all the pieces (including the carrot) out on the body to make sure they will fit:
–sew arms approximately between rows 12-18
–sew feet over rows 1-10.
(I used a running stitch, going up and down just underneath the v shape in each stitch, except for the chains in the toes, and in the end and at the top of the carrot. I went through the middle of the v shape in the chains.)
Weave about 2 inches of your remaining yarn into the stitches on the back, underneath the part that you sewed on so that different colors of yarn won't show through. Cut leaving a tail about 1 ½ inches long.
ATTACH CARROT: Center carrot between arms and sew to body. Refer to photo.
BODY JOINING: Using the 5.0 mm hook, holding fronts and backs of the two body pieces together and picking up the dropped loop from the body that you did not fasten off on, ch1 and sc around through both bodies using inside loops only, making sure to tuck all ends inside. (Also make sure the two body pieces remain lined up. If you have a different number of stitches around each piece, you may need to skip some stitches on one piece as you go along in order to keep them lined up.) Invisible join and fasten off. Weave in end.
EARS: use MC and 3.75 mm hook (make 2)
Row 1: Ch 7, turn, sk first ch, sc in the remaining 6 chains, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 tightly. 2 tr in first st, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st, 1 sl st in next st, ch 1, 1 sc in next st, 3 sc in last st, do not fasten off, continue working around, 1 sc in each of the 6 free loops of beginning chs. Fasten off.
INNER EAR: use white or pink and 3.25 mm hook (make 2):
Row 1: Ch 7, turn. Sk first ch. Sc in the remaining 6 chains, turn.
Row 2: Ch 4, (tr, dc) in first st, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st, sl st in next 2 sts, join in last st. Fasten off leaving tail long enough to sew to ear.
Sew inner ear to the opposite sides of the two ears leaving outer loops free. Line the inner ear up close to the bottom of the ear. Weave in ends.
Now make two more Ears, one at a time, do not fasten off, join to the Ear with Inner Ear attached (Ear/Inner Ear Combo) following the 1st Ear Joining, and 2nd Ear Joining instructions below.
When joining ear pieces together, while working scs around, do not go through the inner ear. At the bottom of the ear, you might need to get under the inner ear just a bit.
1st Ear Joining (use 5.0 mm hook) working across the bottom first
Holding the Ear together with Ear/Inner Ear Combo facing you, ch 1, do not turn, working in the ends of the rows, 4 sc through both thicknesses evenly across the bottom, dc in the same st as the last st made, ch 1, working around the ear, 1 sc in the side of the dc just made, using inside loops only for remaining stitches around, sc in next 5 sts (making sure to use the tops of the first 2 tr sts), sk 1 st, sc in next 3 sts, 3 dc in next st, 1 hdc in next st, sc in last 6 sts, join to 1st st and fasten off, leaving long enough tail to sew to head.
2nd Ear Joining (use 5.0 mm hook) working across the side first
Holding Ears together with Ear/Inner Ear Combo facing you, ch 1 and turn, using only inner loops sc in next 6 sts, 1 hdc in next st, 3 dc in next st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in next st, sk next st, sc in next 4 sts, 3 sc in next st, 4 sc evenly spaced across the bottom (making sure the last st is in the end of the 1st st made in this round), join to next st around the side, finish off leaving a tail long enough to sew to head.
Center ears and sew to top of head. Weave in ends.
